GUIDE
Unreal Engine 5 course for complete beginners
Unreal Engine 5 powers games with film-quality graphics, and it is free until your game earns $1 million. It is also big, which is why beginners get lost. The answer is order: learn each part when your game needs it.
Duke Forger's steps introduce Unreal one piece at a time, from creating the project to packaging a playable build, with every term explained the first time it appears.
The steps
- Step 10: Install the core software
Unreal Engine, the C++ tools, Character Creator 5 with Headshot 3, Blender and version control. Duke checks each one is installed.
- Step 11: Create the Unreal project
In Unreal choose Games, Third Person, Blueprint. You get a working character and camera to build on. Then tell Duke where the project lives so its agent can check it.
- Step 12: Turn on the plugins this guide uses
Plugins add features to Unreal. You need procedural generation, crowds, NPC behavior, Python scripting, MetaHuman and the MCP plugin that lets AI agents operate the editor.
- Step 13: Organize and protect the project
Folders keep thousands of files findable. Version control keeps a history of every change so a broken change can be undone. A second backup protects you from a dead drive.
- Step 16: Set up controls and camera
Movement, looking, jumping, sprinting and interacting, on keyboard and mouse and on a controller. Tune the camera until moving simply feels good.
- Step 17: Build the gameplay structure
Keep the player, the game rules, the interface and saved data in separate pieces. One giant script is how projects become impossible to fix.
- Step 18: Make one combat interaction work
Attack input, timing, hit detection, damage and recovery. The animation is only the picture; code decides when the hit lands and what it does.
- Step 19: Create one enemy
Waiting, noticing you, approaching, attacking, reacting to damage and dying. A State Tree holds its behavior and a navigation mesh lets it walk around obstacles.
- Step 21: Package a standalone build
Packaging turns the project into a game that runs outside the editor. Working in the editor does not prove the packaged game works, so you do it now and after every milestone.
- Step 34: Start the world in World Partition
World Partition splits the map into cells and loads only what is near the player. Turn it on from day one, because converting a world later is painful.
- Step 42: Light the world
Lumen gives real bounce light; MegaLights gives many shadowed lights at night. Color-grade toward your reference board.
- Step 64: Measure and fix performance
Pick a target frame rate and a minimum PC. Unreal Insights shows what costs time; fix the real bottleneck, then measure again.
Common questions
Is Unreal Engine 5 good for beginners?
Yes, if you learn it in order. Blueprints let you build logic without typing code.
Is Unreal Engine free?
Yes. Epic takes a 5% royalty only after a game earns $1 million.
