STEP 5 OF 67 · YOU ARE THE DIRECTOR AND DESIGNER
Write the game's rules as observable behavior
Movement, combat, health, enemies, objectives, progression and death, each written as something you can test. This list becomes your development checklist.
How to do it
- Write one rule per line.
- Make every rule testable: "Press dodge to move quickly sideways and spend 20 stamina."
- Cover movement, combat, health, enemies, objectives, progression and death.
How AI speeds this up
Draft with Duke writes testable starter rules. Later, ask Duke to turn any rule into Blueprint steps or C++ code.
Example from a sample game
Ashfall: "Holding block reduces damage by 70% and drains 10 stamina per second." "At 0 health Kaia respawns at the last campfire and drops 10% of her coin."
Before you move on
In Duke Forger, this step's gate checks:
- You write itRules (one per line)
- Verified by DukePlayer health and aiming style set
Words to know
- Game rules
- Exactly how the game behaves, written so each rule can be tested.
- Blueprint
- Unreal's visual scripting: you build game logic by connecting boxes (nodes) instead of typing code.
