STEP 2 OF 67 · YOU ARE THE CONCEPT ARTIST

Set the quality bar with references

Collect 20 to 40 screenshots from games and films that show the look you want: light, skin, cities, crowds. Pictures settle arguments that words cannot.

How to do it

  1. Save screenshots that match the look you want, and note what each one shows (lighting, skin, crowd density...).
  2. Upload them here as your reference board.
  3. Write your art direction in one or two sentences.
How AI speeds this up

Image generators can turn your references into concept frames of your own world, so the target becomes your game and not someone else's.

Example from a sample game

Ashfall's board: 28 images. Dusty orange light, black volcanic rock, worn leather, crowded frontier markets at dusk.

Before you move on

In Duke Forger, this step's gate checks:

Words to know

Reference board
A collection of images that show the look you are aiming for.
Art direction
The one or two sentences that define how everything should look, used to keep every asset consistent.
